2016 Leadership Award Winner: Sally Rankin Craig

Sally Rankin Craig Named Thomas Foundation Leadership Award Winner

Gillette – Sally Rankin Craig, a counselor with Westwood High School, an alternative secondary school in Gillette, was honored as the winner of the ninth annual Leadership Award from the Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation. The Leadership Award recognizes and honors an adult who champions the needs of young people who are at risk.

Susan Thomas, Foundation Director, said, “Sally has unconditionally given her time, her wisdom, and her ability to hear between the lines to every student who needs her. Sally’s dedication to those young people who need her most is absolutely unmatched. She is the best. I am honored to know her.”

The Leadership Award was presented to Ms. Craig during a ceremony at Westwood High School, which was attended by Ms. Craig’s students, peers, family members and many community leaders. In addition to the honor, the award comes with a $2,500 check to be used as the winner chooses.

Ms. Craig was nominated by Bonnie Terrell of Wheatland who told of the profound impact Ms. Craig had in the lives of students at a residential treatment facility for abused adolescent girls. Terrell also lauded the counselor’s selflessness in helping students and staying ‘invested with their promise.’

Westwood Principal Kelly Morehead launched the press conference honoring Sally Rankin Craig, asking, “How do you do justice to someone that is always looking for ways to help others, someone that puts in endless hours to make sure others are taken care of, simply out of the goodness of her heart?”

The Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation focuses on students who are at risk. This award is one of the key elements to the Foundation. The others are a statewide mentorship program that includes scholarships; and grants to groups that support our goals. The Foundation has also recently launched a new program called ‘Retrain to Gain’ to help energy workers who have been laid-off receive new training or finish their education.

The Foundation is named in part for the late United States Senator Craig Thomas who championed the cause of Wyoming's youth.
