Casper’s Flores and Tille Awarded Thomas Foundation Scholarship

Cheyenne – Eva Flores and Abigail Tille will receive two of the very first scholarships from the new Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation to continue their studies and build careers.

Flores will pursue studies to become a cosmetologist at the Rocky Mountain Academy of Skin, Hair and Nails. Tille, a Natrona High graduate, will study at Casper College to be a radiology technician. Flores and Tille are among the first group of Wyoming students selected for financial awards from the new statewide education foundation.

Susan Thomas, foundation director, said, "We work with individuals who want to get back in school and reach for a dream. Eva and Abigail wanted to pursue their dreams, and we are so proud to be part of the effort."

The newly formed Craig and Susan Foundation will give particular focus to Wyoming's at-risk youth population and those who champion young people.

In its 2008 launch, two core elements currently comprise the educational outreach effort of the Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation. One core mission is scholarships for at risk students. The second focus is leadership awards for those Wyoming individuals who work so diligently to make a difference in the lives of students who are not at the top of every list.

"It's about second chances. One Wyoming young person at a time through education and opportunity," said Susan

The foundation is named in part for the late United States Senator Craig Thomas who championed the cause of Wyoming's youth.

"Craig believed that a fundamental part of his job was to work with Wyoming's youth -- to urge them to further their education or training, and to help them be good citizens. From mechanics to marketing, culinary school to cosmetology, welding to technology. Be it a dream to go to trade schools, community colleges or colleges, we want to help students get there," Susan Thomas said.

The foundation awarded scholarships to 13 Wyoming young people in each corner of Wyoming. Recipients include Linda Alverson of Cheyenne, Stephanie Calfior of Laramie, Hana Collins of Crowheart, Eva Flores of Casper, Zipacna Graham of Douglas, Antonio Gutierrez of Torrington, Jamee Hansen of Lusk, Lindsey Jaques of Auburn, Jessica Joseph of Sheridan, Matt McNamara of Cody, Joshua Repsis of Sheridan, Abigail Tille of Casper and Blaine Winter of Douglas.

“This will be their first semester to advance their education,” Thomas added. “At each step, the foundation will be personally mentoring these young people to help ensure their weekly success. We're excited – this is a good group of young people. They want to make the most of their educations and the Craig and Susan Thomas Foundation is delighted to be able to help.”
